Google Gets Rid of Paid Search Ads On Right Hand Side of Page
With time comes change. It’s true with every industry but none greater than the digital world.
Google has decided to change the way its paid ads show up on the search engine results page (SERP). Ads along the right hand side of the SERPs have been eliminated plus Google is now only showing a max of 7 paid search ads per page (ads 1-4 at the top of the page and ads 5-7 at the bottom of the page). They are leaving the right hand side of the page open for their Google Shopping Ads and the Knowledge Panel (Google maps, pictures, reviews, business info, etc.).
There are probably a lot of reasons why Google has decided to get rid of the side bar ads but one of the main reasons is to clean up the SERP page and give the user a more consistent experience between mobile, tablet, and desktop.
What does this mean for you?
At InterActive Circle we will continue to optimize all paid search campaigns and monitor the changes as they come. Many of our paid search strategies involve positioning our ads to show up in the top four spots already so these changes will have a minimal effect in our day-to-day operations. However, if you don’t already have a Google Shopping campaign it may be time to start one.

It is also more important than ever to make sure your Google Business page is optimized, indexed in the right directories, and that you are boosting reviews from your customers. Google is still figuring out how they will use this newly created “extra” space on their pages so making sure your local SEO strategy is solid will put you in a position to capitalize on the new changes.
